The Canadian River is located in the United States of America and is 760 miles long running through the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. Its origin is in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado. From there it runs in a zigzag direction until it gets to Raton, New Mexico, then it goes to Springer, New Mexico where it creates a deep canyon. Dams are located along the river, one at Conchas Lake, another at Ute Lake at Loga, New Mexico. The Canadian River crosses the Texas Panhandle where it also is dammed at Sanford, Texas and Lake Meredith was created as a result. The River flows pass Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where it reaches another dam located near Eufaula, Oklahoma. From here it joins the Arkansas River.
No one knows why the river located in the United States is named the Canadian. Speculation has it that it was given its name by explorers who actually came from Canada. Others believe it was because it was thought that the river flowed into Canada since part of it does flow northeast. Also there is a Spanish word “Canada” that means canyon. Canyons can be found along the river in Texas. |
