The Bug River is located in the countries of Ukraine and Poland and it serves as part of the border between the two countries. It is divided into the Western Bug River and the Southern Bug River. It is pronounced “Buh”. The River is 479 miles long and its basin has a 24,494 square mile area. It begins in the Volhynian-Podolian Hills in the country of West Ukraine flowing north from there. The Bug River drains into the Narew River where it eventually finds its way to the Baltic Sea. Along the way it joins the Dnieper River via the Dnieper-Bug Canal. Other rivers that it joins along the way to the Baltic Sea are the Poltva River, Bukowa River, Uherka River, Krzna River, Lug River, Lesna, River, Brok River, Bukowa River, Huczwa River, Wlodawka River, Liwiec River, Mukhavets River, Nurzec River, Warenzhanka River and Solokija River.
Not only does the Bug River serve as a geographical border, but historically it has served as a border between religious beliefs. One side of the border was Catholic while the other was Orthodox. During World War II after the invasion of Poland the River also served as a border between the Germans and the Russians. |
