The Andaman Sea is part of the Indian Ocean. It is 745 miles long and 403 miles wide. Its shores touch the countries of Myanmar and Thailand.
At the bottom of the Andaman Sea is the border line between two separate tectonic plates called the Burma Plate and the Sunda plate. Scientists watch this area with much interest as this is potentially earthquake territory.
And if the presence of tectonic plates weren’t enough to cause worry for the area there is also the presence of an active volcano. Within the island group of Great Andaman there is an island called Barren Island that has an active volcano on it. There is another island with a volcano on it, Narcondam, but the volcano is not active. |
