The Alboran Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea and is the coasts of Spain and Morocco. Within the Sea is the Strait of Gibraltar joining the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. Because the bodies of water come together at the Alboran Sea there is a variety of marine species found in the area. The Sea is also home to many small islands, but one in particular is worth mentioning, the Isla de Alboran, a beautiful island belonging to Spain.
The Gibraltar Arc (an arc of mountains) made up of the Baetic Cordillera of Spain and the Rif Mountains of Morocco surround Alboran Sea. This area is known as the Baetic-Rifan Complex. Scientists study this area because it is so diverse in ecology. Many species that have gone extinct in some areas have survived in the Baetic-Rifan Complex. |
